Lee’s teacher was Wong Shun Leung, himself a student of Yip Man. Lee’s letter to Wong stated, “Although I am (technically) a student of Ip Man, I actually learned my kung fu from you.” Wong was well known for his participation in illegal underground martial arts competitions (“beimo”), where he was rumored to be undefeated. Wong retired from these fights after accidentally blinding an opponent. Yip probably had several students during his lifetime, some staying for a few months, others longer, and others perhaps a few weeks. This explains the existence of people who claim to be descended from Ip Man.
