Jason Statham’s Martial Arts Journey

Jason Statham, widely known for his iconic roles in action films, has extensive experience in martial arts, which greatly contributed to his screen image. His dedication to various disciplines brought him commendable experience in various forms of martial arts.

Early Training and Diving Career

Jason’s journey to martial arts began at a young age, when he taught himself Wing Chun, kickboxing and karate, working at market stalls with his father.

However, his official training in martial arts began at the age of 31, when he began practicing karate, kickboxing and Wing Chun.

As a teenager, he was a member of the British national diving team for 12 years and participated in the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Transition to Acting and Formal Training

Jason’s acting career began in 1998 with his debut role in the film “Cards, money, two trunks”.

He started practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2002 after he befriended film director Guy Ritchie, and they entered the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan, New York.

In addition to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he also trained in taekwondo and probably took formal training between 2002 and 2010 to hone his high and striking kicking techniques that can be seen in his films.

Current Belt and Training

As of 2023, Jason Statham holds a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which he has been training inconsistently for over 20 years.

He continues his training at the Roger Gracie Academy in London when in the UK.

Statham’s martial arts repertoire includes Brazilian jiu-jitsu, karate, kickboxing, wing chun (kung fu), and taekwondo.
